Why I'm choosing a rural university over a city school

When I told my friends I was considering West Texas A&M, they asked: “Why would you go there? It's in the middle of nowhere.” They couldn't understand why I'd choose a small town over a city. I've been trying to explain.

I want to be known. At a big city university, I'd be a number. At a rural school, professors know my name. A student review said: “My advisor checks in on me. She helped me plan my transfer credits before I even asked.” That's the kind of support I want.

I want hands-on experience. The pre-vet program at West Texas has livestock. Students work with animals from day one. A reviewer said: “I learned more in the barn than in some classrooms.”

I want focus. There's not much to do in Canyon except study, hike, and hang out with friends. That's not a drawback for me. I'm not going to college to party. I'm going to learn.

I'm not stuck forever. One student wrote: “I'm here for my degree. After that, I can go anywhere. But I'm getting a great education for a fraction of the cost.”

I'm not settling. I'm being strategic. I'm choosing a place where I'll be supported, where I'll get hands-on experience, and where I can focus. The city will still be there when I graduate. For now, I'm choosing a quiet campus, a good program, and professors who know my name. 🐾
