Here's the question that keeps me up at night: can I get financial aid without a social security number? The short answer: it's complicated. The long answer? Buckle up. 😬

First: The FAFSA? Requires a social. So federal aid is out. No Pell Grants. No federal loans. Nada de eso.

Second: State aid? Used to be possible through the Texas Dream Act. In-state tuition, state grants—eso fue lo que nos quitaron. 💔

Third: University aid? Depende. Some Texas schools have their own institutional aid that doesn't require a social. Some don't. You have to ask. Directly. I've sent so many emails my fingers hurt. 🖐️

Fourth: Private scholarships? Esta es mi única esperanza. Some private organizations don't ask about status. But they're competitive. And they're small. And there are thousands of us applying.

Fifth: Crowdfunding? Lo odio. I hate that this is even a conversation. But I've seen students raise money on GoFundMe. It feels like begging. But if it means college? Tal vez... 🥺

Here's what I've learned from talking to other undocumented students:

Make a spreadsheet. Every scholarship, every deadline, every requirement. Color-code it. Mine is neon at this point.

Apply to everything. Even the $500 ones. Even the ones that feel like a long shot. Todo suma. Everything adds up.

Talk to counselors. Some are useless. Some are angels. Find the angels. They know things that aren't on websites.

Connect with others. There are Facebook groups, Discord servers, communities. Other undocumented students share opportunities. No estás solo. You're not alone.

Be careful. Not everyone is safe to trust. Guard your information. Tu privacidad es importante.

One student I met—she's at UT now. She told me: "I applied to 47 scholarships. Got 4. It was enough." 47. Cuarenta y siete. 😳

I'm at 23 applications right now. Twenty-three. Some days I want to give up. Some days I stare at my spreadsheet and cry. 😭

But then I think about my mom. She works 12-hour shifts cleaning hotels. She does it so I can have a future. If she can do that, I can fill out one more application.

So I will. Una más. Y otra. Y otra.

The system wasn't built for us. But aquí estamos. We're still here. Still fighting. Still applying. 💪
