My heart goes out to everyone affected 💔 Staying informed about school safety in Texas and how we can support students

Like many of you, I've been following the recent news from Texas, and it's heavy. The acquittal of the former Uvalde school police officer this week has brought so many emotions back for families and communities . It's a painful reminder of the 2022 tragedy at Robb Elementary that claimed 19 children and two teachers .

But what gives me a little hope is seeing how Texas is working to prevent future tragedies. The state has been strengthening its Safe and Supportive Schools Program (SSSP) , which focuses on mental health, threat assessments, and crisis response . Schools are now required to conduct and report threat assessments in a statewide system . Districts like Arlington ISD have multidisciplinary teams working with local police to identify and help students who may be struggling .

There are also anonymous reporting tools like the Texas Suspicious Activity Reporting Network (TxSARNet) where anyone can report concerns at www.iWatchTX.org or through the app . Houston just launched Safespace, a student-led digital safety platform to give teens 24/7 access to resources .

If you're a student feeling anxious, please know you're not alone. Talk to a counselor, use these resources, and take care of your mental health. We can all play a part in keeping our schools safe. Sending strength to everyone navigating this 💙
