Reentry success: Why going back to college later in life is worth it – my story

I returned to school after years away, and I want to share my answer to whether college is worth it for adult learners.

Spoiler: absolutely yes.

Catherine Allen from Texas Woman's University put words to my experience perfectly. She said: 'My path to higher education hasn't been a straight line, but every step has shaped who I am today. From exploring Early Childhood Education, Real Estate, Dental Assisting and Massage Therapy to ultimately pursuing my BAAS in Professional Studies at Texas Woman's University, I've learned that higher education is not just about choosing a single path, it's about discovering what truly resonates with you' .

That's exactly how I felt. I tried different things, some didn't work out, but they all taught me something. And when I finally found my path, my degree opened doors that had been closed for years. Jennifer Rhodes, another TWU student, said returning to school 'has shown me the importance of a degree in opening doors and gaining respect in the workplace' .

The research confirms this. The University of the District of Columbia report shows that graduates from programs in health fields, computer science, engineering, and education earn median wages above a living wage just one year after graduation . That's not just for traditional students – that's for everyone.

If you're thinking about going back but worried it's 'too late,' let me be your sign. It's not too late. College is worth it at any age.
