Typing vs. handwriting: Finding the right balance for Chinese writing practice ⌨️✍️

In the modern world, I type way more than I write. Does handwriting even matter anymore? After researching and experimenting, here's my take on balancing both.

Handwriting matters because:
  • It builds deeper character memory through muscle memory
  • You understand stroke order and character structure
  • In exams, you still need to write by hand
  • Calligraphy and cultural appreciation require handwriting
Typing matters because:
  • It's how we communicate daily (WeChat, email)
  • You can produce longer texts faster
  • Pinyin typing reinforces pronunciation
  • Even native Chinese type more than they write
My balanced approach:
  • Learn characters with handwriting (stroke order, radicals)
  • Practice daily with 10-15 minutes handwriting
  • Use typing for longer compositions, messages, notes
  • Review handwritten characters regularly
The Shanghai government website makes a great point: recognizing characters is more important than handwriting them perfectly, since you can type if you recognize . But handwriting still helps with recognition!

Find what works for your goals. For me, 70% typing, 30% handwriting keeps skills sharp without burnout.
