UST Houston: A tiny liberal arts bubble in the middle of a massive city.

I go to the University of St. Thomas in Houston, and explaining my college experience to people is always funny. "It's a small Catholic liberal arts school," I say. "And it's right in the middle of the Museum District, surrounded by the fourth-largest city in America." The combination is weird, and I love it.

The campus feels like an oasis. It's quiet, green, walkable, with beautiful old buildings and a real sense of peace. You forget you're in a city of 2 million people. Then you walk two blocks and you're at a world-class museum, a hip coffee shop, or a massive park.

Classes are small and discussion-based. My philosophy classes have maybe 15 people. We sit around a table and argue about Aristotle. The professors know your name and push you to think deeper. It's the opposite of a lecture hall.

The Basilian core is no joke. UST has a strong liberal arts core curriculum. You take theology, philosophy, literature, art history. Even as a business major, I'm reading Plato. It makes you think differently.

Houston is your campus. The downside of some small schools is being in the middle of nowhere. Not here. I have internships, cultural events, and restaurants from every country imaginable right outside my door. The city is part of my education.

It's not for everyone. If you want big football games and frat parties, this isn't it. But if you want a close-kint intellectual community with the resources of a global city, UST is worth a look.

Any other Celts (yes, our mascot is a Celt) on here? ☘️

The Basilian core was HARD but honestly shaped how I think. I came in as a pre-med who just wanted to get through requirements and leave. Graduated as someone who actually loves philosophy and ethics. It changes you.

Also, shoutout to the quiet campus in the middle of chaos. Studying under the oak trees while the city hums outside is a vibe you can't replicate.

Houston is the perfect city for a small school. Best of both worlds.
