When people think Texas colleges, they think UT, A&M, maybe Texas Tech. No one thinks about the Rio Grande Valley. And honestly? That's their loss.

I'm a sophomore at UTRGV, and my experience is probably really different from what you see on TV.

We're a Hispanic-serving institution. Like, over 90% of students are Hispanic. That means culturally, it's a whole vibe. Spanglish in the hallways, amazing food everywhere, and a real sense of community. Dia de los Muertos celebrations on campus aren't a diversity event—they're just Tuesday.

We're huge, but we feel small. UTRGV has multiple campuses, so you get the resources of a big school but the feel of a smaller one. My classes are reasonably sized, and my professors are accessible.

The cost is unbeatable. In-state tuition is low, and there are tons of scholarships for Valley students. I'm graduating with almost no debt.

The location is wild. We're 20 minutes from the beach (South Padre) and 20 minutes from Mexico. The culture, the food, the weather—it's unlike anywhere else.

Is it for everyone? Maybe not. It's hot. It's far from everything else in Texas. But if you want an affordable, culturally rich education with a real sense of belonging, check us out.

Anyone else from the Valley? Represent!

Stockman, you're making me homesick and I'm literally on campus right now. 😂

The multiple campuses thing is worth emphasizing. I'm at the Edinburg campus but have taken classes in Brownsville. Different vibes but both good. The shuttle system works decently if you need to go between them.

Also, the medical school is growing fast. If you're pre-med or pre-nursing, the opportunities here are expanding. My friend is doing research with faculty that would only be available to grad students at bigger schools.

The food comment is understated. The Valley has some of the best Mexican food in the country. Not even exaggerating. Breakfast tacos alone are worth the move.

Go Vaqueros! 🤠🇲🇽
