Any tips on affordable housing options near West Texas A&M University?

As senior in Baylor, majoring in biochemistry, I've been tossing around the idea of going to med school. West Texas A&M University has caught my eye, mostly due to their incredible health sciences programs. Now, the thing is, while I'm used to Waco, Canyon seems like an entirely different ball game. And so far, have not been able to get much insight into living options for students over there.

So, if anyone here is familiar with the area or studied at WTAMU, could you shed some light on this? For instance, are dorms the best way to go? Or should be scouting for an apartment off-campus? Honestly, I'd love me cozy apartment but one that won't leave me eating ramen every day (unless it's spicy chicken flavor my guilty pleasure)! Also, as bonus question are any specific areas near campus more student-friendly than others? Ideally, I’d want somewhere close enough to not have the headache of long commutes but far enough to escape when necessary (you know those days when you need your own space). Boy, can already taste that sweet taste of independence mixed with slight panic. Isn’t college life grand? Anyhow, guys gals, any pointers will be greatly appreciated!. Is affordability and comfort too much of dream for future med student in Canyon? Or can it be reality?
