My university provides a pretty basic essay grader through the library website. It's fine... but it's also kinda boring and just points out spelling errors and basic stuff.

I was thinking of upgrading my game and trying out one of those paid AI-powered writing assistants I keep seeing ads for on Instagram. You know the ones—they promise to "elevate your prose" and "enhance your argument's flow."

But there are like, fifty of them! Does anyone have recommendations for an app that's actually worth the monthly subscription? I don't need one that writes the paper for me, obviously. I just want something smarter than the basic one I have now, maybe one that gives better feedback on sentence variety and tone. Has anyone tried any that they absolutely love? Or are they all basically the same? Help a stressed sophomore out!

Grammarly is the safest bet—the free version gives you solid feedback on grammar, clarity, and tone. The premium is $12/month and adds plagiarism checking and more advanced suggestions .

If you want something specifically academic, Paperpal is built for research writing and understands things like citations better .

For a totally free option, JetBrains Grazie is actually really good and doesn't collect your data . Works in Google Docs too.

The key is none of them replace your own brain. Use them to catch stuff you miss, not to write for you.
