I've been struggling with anxiety this semester — who isn't, honestly. I finally worked up the courage to book an appointment at the counseling center. They told me the wait is six weeks. Six. Weeks.
I'm not in crisis, but also... I kind of am? By the time I get seen, the semester will basically be over.
The Young Invincibles survey confirms this isn't just my school. 38% of young Texans reported difficulty accessing mental health services, the highest rate among all states surveyed . Even when services exist, students describe "insurance complexity, narrow provider networks, and months-long wait times" that make care functionally inaccessible .
What students end up doing:
I've started looking into online therapy options (better than nothing) and support groups (free). Some schools have peer counseling programs — not the same as professional help, but at least someone listens.
If you've found resources that actually work at your Texas school, please share. I'm desperate and so are a lot of us.

What students end up doing:
- Delaying care until it becomes an emergency
- Forgoing treatment entirely
- Using crisis services instead of consistent care
- Relying on friends who aren't trained to help
