Is on-campus housing worth it for transfer students at UT?

I've been trying to decide whether to live on campus next year. I'm a transfer student, so I missed the freshman dorm experience. Part of me wonders if I'm missing out on something important.

The Transfer LLC is located in Jester East, which has a "community bath setup" (shared bathrooms) . It's not fancy. But the value isn't in the room — it's in the community.

Pros of on-campus housing:
  • Built-in community with other transfers
  • Peer mentors and organized events
  • Close to classes (no Austin traffic!)
  • Meal plan = no cooking
  • Easier to get involved on campus
Cons:
  • Cost: Jester shared space with community bath is about $4,500-$5,000 per semester
  • No private bathroom
  • Less independence
  • You have to follow dorm rules
UT Austin actually has a pilot scholarship program for students who receive tuition support through Texas Advance Commitment and live on campus . The scholarship was created specifically to help with housing costs .

My financial breakdown:
  • On-campus housing: ~$9,000-10,000 per year
  • Off-campus apartment (with roommates): $7,000-8,000 per year
  • Difference: $1,000-2,000
Is community worth $1,000-2,000? I'm not sure.

A transfer student I talked to said: "Living in the LLC my first semester was the best decision I made. I met my best friends there. But after that, I moved off-campus to save money." That might be the sweet spot — one semester in the LLC to build connections, then off-campus for affordability.

Another thing to consider: the LLC is only for first-year transfer students . If you don't do it your first semester, you can't do it at all.

I'm leaning toward doing it for fall semester only. Anyone else faced this decision? What did you choose? 🏠

I lived off-campus my first semester and it was isolating. I didn't know anyone, I was commuting, and UT felt huge and unfriendly. I ended up moving into the Transfer LLC in spring semester. Best decision I made. I finally met people, figured out campus, and stopped feeling like an outsider.

The bathrooms aren't great. The cost is higher. But for one semester, the community is worth it. You can't put a price on not feeling alone at a massive university.
