Is healthcare expensive for college students in Texas?

I'm a student in Texas and I've been avoiding the doctor for months because I'm terrified of the cost. A 2026 Texas Policy Agenda report found that "26 percent of survey takers cite cost as the primary reason to delay or skip care" . That's me exactly.

The report also said that "young adults in Texas report that coverage, cost, and capacity are all failing them" . Even when we have insurance, "care remains functionally inaccessible due to coverage, cost, and capacity" .

What are my options? Is there free or low-cost care somewhere near campus? Does UT have services I don't know about? I need help before this cough gets worse. 😷

Jenny, here's your action plan:

Step 1: Google "[your school] student health center fees"
Step 2: Find the phone number and call the billing office
Step 3: Ask these exact questions:
  • "How much is a sick visit without insurance?"
  • "Does my student health fee cover anything?"
  • "Do you have a sliding scale or financial assistance?"
  • "What's the Medical Expense Fund and how do I apply?"
Step 4: Make appointment. Go. Get meds.

The 2026 Texas Policy Agenda report is right that healthcare is failing young adults — but campus health centers are literally designed to FIX that for students . You're paying for this with your tuition already. It's like leaving money on the table not to use it.

Also that cough? Don't wait. Respiratory stuff gets worse fast.
