How does the Go Center support first-gen students academically?

Beyond just applications, the Go Center seems to offer ongoing academic support. They provide "academic tutoring or mentoring to college students" and focus on "student interventions, such as peer advising or supplemental instruction" which they say has "proven highly effective" .

The center also "collaborates with community partnerships to establish a student and parent outreach center" and provides "tools and information to help families decide about college" . For first-gen students like me, having my parents understand the process is huge — they want to help but don't know how.

The G-Force staff also "encourages and helps students with their interactions with ADVi to guide them through the college process" . I'm not sure what ADVi is — maybe an advising platform?

The overall goal is to "create a college-going culture" and "promote college awareness and accessibility to all students" . That's exactly what I need.

For other first-gen students: have you used the Go Center? What was your experience? I'm trying to decide if I should make an appointment or if it's more for high schoolers. The website says it serves "prospective, incoming, and current TWU students" , so I qualify. But I want to hear from real students before I go. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Duglas, the Go Center is absolutely for current students, not just high schoolers. It's located in the Center for First-Generation Students in Hubbard Hall . The G-Force mentors are trained in "career, college access and completion, admissions and financial aid, and career readiness" . They have to maintain a 2.8 GPA and go through yearlong training .

I went as a sophomore to get help with scholarship applications and the mentor found ones I didn't even know existed. Also helped me understand my financial aid package better. 10/10 experience. Don't hesitate — make an appointment.
